The Story Behind ‘Naturally Nerdy Mommy’!

profile color

Hey there–and thanks for checking out my FIRST EVER POST! Before I start filling my blog with adventures in Twinland, cloth diapering, homemade baby food, and just any general nerdiness and parenting experiences, I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself.

My name’s Sophia, and I’m a twenty-something year old new twin mom from the D.C. area who loves everything from Harry Potter to Dragonball to Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem. Back in college, I majored in History and Archaeology, and have an obsession with books and literature (especially fantasy, surprise) that just as easily could’ve made me at least an English minor. I opted to specialize in ancient east African history–and fun fact: I ended up learning to read a phase of Egyptian hieroglyphs (Middle Egyptian, for my fellow Egyptology students).

I ended up booking it out to California to go for my PhD in Archaeology. Worked on my Egyptian, stared at A LOT of pottery sherds and even more spreadsheets, went to Sudan for an excavation–which was definitely different from any dig I had been on in the Midatlantic–but the stress of graduate school just wasn’t worth it for me. I fell out of love with what I thought was my passion, and couldn’t justify continuing. But that’s a whole other can of worms that perhaps warrants a totally different type of blog!

So it was back to the East Coast with me and my new Californian fiancé to get married in the *beautiful* sweltering humidity of a Virginian summer…as one of our West Coast friends so aptly put it: “It feels like a steaming shower and an oven had a baby”. Yes, friend, yes it does. Welcome to the Southeast.

With the wedding in the books, I went from archaeologist to tour guide–and the rest is history. A few years after we got married, I had our beautiful boy/girl twins: Lucien and Amélie!* And this is where the “naturally” bit of my moniker kicks in: Besides my super obvious nerdiness, I’m also very passionate about trying to keep it ‘natural’, making environmentally-conscious decisions that also are good for the family. I’m not perfect, and there are definitely some things I’m sure I could do better–but I try my best by cloth diapering, making our baby food at home, buying mostly wooden or food/medical-grade silicone toys, and all that good stuff.

So why blog? Well, first off: I know I live off of fellow mothers’ blogs and vlogs, especially in the wee hours of the morning while I’m up at who-knows-what-time breastfeeding the twins. Scrolling through or watching their stories and tidbits of advice help keep me awake and hey, it feels nice to empathize with another mom!

But I noticed most of the blogs I read–which were also lifestyle mom blogs–involved a lot of clothes shopping hauls and stuff like that (which is totally fine, and awesome if that’s your schtick…plus let’s be honest, I love those blogs all the same!). But when it comes down to me, that’s just not really my lifestyle–unless that shopping haul involves books, maybe a video game or two, and some kind of fandom nerdiness like Harry Potter collectibles or a Final Fantasy XIV art piece. Oh! Or some cooking supplies and awesome farmers’ market finds (because surprise! I actually do LOVE to cook).

So before I continue to ramble, let me end it there. Welcome to my blog, thanks for stopping by, and I hope you enjoy your time here! Subscribe if you’re so inclined, introduce yourself (I’d love to get to know some of my readers), and carry on–you’re doing awesome!
